Happy Easter – it vas ferry grate.

Elder Anderson was sick for most of the week, so that cramped our style but the weekend came and we had some nice things happen.

Once Anderson got better we decided for a fresh start so we rearranged the apartment. I may have broken a bunch of interior decorating rules but the place looks dang cool and we got “tons of extra room for activities”.

Friday we finally got back to some good finding but the Easter break took people elsewhere and they were replaced by tourists… But on Saturday we talked to a guy from Bayern and told him we were talking about Easter and giving out a book, he said he didn’t really believe in God, so we told him he could try it out. Well he accepted the challenge… too bad he lives in Bayern, and didn’t give us his info. But who knows 😉

Sunday there was a baptism! The other Elders in our cozy little 4 man district baptized a girl from Kazakhstan who’s lived in Germany for the last 9 years or so. It was a really cool baptism, it was really a special day for her.

For someone who’s been searching for the truth she said she didn’t think she would find it right across the street. (She lives straight across from the church)

Perspective is always everything, right now is important, but the eternal prospective is the one that matters. Problems of life become smaller and smaller as we determine what we really want in life.

Today for P-day we met as a zone with a bunch of YSAs and played football, like real football, pigskin and all.

Right now we are doing a “40 day fast” where a different member fasts for the missionary work each day. And the goal is to give out 40 Book of Mormons in these 40 days. It’s been quite the blessing to have some of the members get excited about missionary work.

Tuesday we got the first Book of Mormon out, for that was itself a miracle. We had to both be in Hamburg by 1 for our exchanges with the Zone Leaders, so we only had an hour or so to do some street contacting but with the help from upstairs, we were able to give one out. Throughout the week we have been able to give out 5 Book of Mormons. And I cannot say it was because of what I did that is for sure. Each book we gave out came along with its own small miracle. Whether it was the husband saying yes to his wife that said no, or us only having 15 minutes to find, with no one on the street, but 1 of the 2 people we talked to accepted a copy. The miracles are not as transparent as I often think.

Unfortunately we haven’t been able to make an appointment with anyone yet, but only good can come from the work that we are privileged to do.

Saturday we went to help our member to finish off his “wood gathering” for the year, and he happened to have his son-in-law, and some of his grandkids visiting him for the weekend to also help, they are also all less active, which is a little hard to understand because his son-in-law talks about how wonderful his mission was. But it was good that we got to spend most of the day with them, the grandkids are in their twenties and haven’t been around missionaries for a while, so they were able to have some fun with the missionaries and see that we TOO are normal people. (Just a little strange and peculiar…)

To be honest, I’m loving having a car. Finding parking is a game I’d rather not play… but it’s been quite the blessing. Wednesday we drove to Hamburg to practice a musical number we are performing at a baptism, and I’ll have to say driving in a big city really keeps you on your toes!

Right now we’ve be able to make some good friendships with our less actives, it’s really easy to share the gospel with someone when you have a friendship with them.

Because the gospel is a personal thing, we have to teach it on a personal level, without that personal bond, true repentance cannot be taught and will not be accepted. Our investigators need to feel a touch of our love for them before they will choose to accept the gospel in their lives. I have come to love the people of Germany, not that I always react or think the right way when someone speaks rudely to us, but I do love them and if they will give me the chance I will show them that love. As a missionary I get to practice a peek of what the Savior offers to us, his loving hand if we are willing to accept it. There are many around us that need that help, Often these people don’t even seem like they need it, but as we are all called by God to help our fellow man, we need to make sure that we are ready to accept that call.

Were I elect like you,

I would encircle me with love, and raise

A rampart of my fellows; it should seem

Impossible for me to fail, so watched

By gentle friends who made my cause their own.

Gold

Not a bad week, Tuesday we were in Hamburg for zone training meeting, where we got to teach old and brand new missionaries in two classes 30 minutes a piece about memorizing the good word (scriptures and such) it was good, and I learned a lot as well.

In other news I received my German license, and have the joy of driving a beautiful 2013 Opel corsa… 0-60km in under 15 seconds. One could call it a dream, or other things… Haha

My wish this week is that we all love people a little more. Forgive the sinners! Help the stragglers! If we apply faith in Jesus Christ more to our lives, we can see why it’s more important that we start working on the dandelions in our own yard. The dandelions we see across the street won’t have as much of an effect on us, and we may come to point where we see that every house in the neighborhood has dandelions!

We all have our struggles, and know our short points. Not as often is it needed that others point them out to us or those around us. But the Lord wants to help us along the way.

The refiner’s fire is real, I’ve seen it on my mission as I’ve searched to come closer to Christ.

When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,

My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply.

The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design

Thy dross to consume, thy dross to consume,

Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

For P-day today we went into the Forest, and the wandering stick I have came out of retirement. We also tracked a family of wild boars that we saw, which then led to us getting lost for an hour…

Wonder World with Wunderbehrndt

For transfers this week I was up in Hamburg sending off my companion and waiting with the one and only Elder Bailey. Funny story I still don’t have my German license, so it should be here this week, but we had to repark the car. So Elder Bailey got to drive for the first time in Germany by trying to find a parking spot in Hamburg. Eventually we made it… Haha

Elder Behrndt (German) in my district had to pick up his trainee on Wednesday so we picked up my new companion Elder Anderson, and then went back to their area to teach English class and a lesson. We then ended up spending the night there as well.

Right now we are working to get the program up and running, we went back to the forest to do service again, met with the bishop, and a bunch of other members. Now we just need some solid people to teach!

On Sunday I bore my testimony of pondering, before my mission it was a bit of a foreign concept to me, music, sports, friends etc. but on my mission I’ve found so much wonderful revelation through the simple quiet moments of meditation. Not trying to sound like a guru or something haha, but it really is a great time that we can receive personal revelation.

Allstar Weekend

A couple highlights from this week – we found a guy in the area book, went by and he talked to us about how he read the Book of Mormon and how he thought it was good, and how humans are just slaves to aliens and that’s where the pyramids come from. Yeah, it took a quick 180°… but we made another appointment out with him not knowing what to expect. Turns out he’s a pretty interesting guy, he bounces a lot from topic to topic. I think he’s read everything that has come in his path. He believes very strongly that the Catholic Church isn’t true. He made it clear quite a few times… “Ja und der Krezzug…”(the crusades… luckily I learned the vocabulary thanks to Indiana Jones) well we figured out that we could throw the topic around and he wouldn’t notice either, “yeah the Holy Grail, if the Book of Mormon is true that means Christ visited the Americas…” We have another appointment, not really sure how much interest he has but we will see.

We visited a really cool member family this week, the wife cooked us some dang good lamb, and the husband invited us next week to go with him into the woods to chop trees, so it should be a good week. This week I thought a lot about personal progression, and what I found is that it really is amazing that we can progress and improve, seeing our progression is only half of our struggle, I believe those around can often see it better than we can. When we look to compliment others and move forward in faith, we can all come closer to reaching our goal of eternal life. Together.

Our area gets split by what use to be East and West.
Also a member tried to kiss me this week, luckily she was only 7…

Hamburg

It was a fun week, the downside was I was sick for most of it, but it
still was a lot of fun.

On Tuesday we traveled to Hamburg for my nice little 6 hour meeting, and
it was actually pretty good, we read from the scriptures, did role
plays, talked about the Savior – so pretty much all that a good meeting
should have. After the meeting I had an exchange with Elder Winter
from American Fork, and after the busy day, we picked up some Burger
King.

The next day Elder Winter and I went and visited a less active member
that we heard was pretty cool. Turns out he’s now an atheist that’s in a
heavy metal band. At first we didn’t know what to expect because he’s
this pretty big guy all covered in tattoos. But he was just a lovable
nice guy! He had a really nice apartment and we talked for a long
time. He said he wasn’t going to come back to church, but he said if
he did, it would be back “to the Mormons.” Haha
I was again reminded to never judge somebody right off the bat, because
you never know what you are going to get, it’s like a box of
chocolates or something…

At the end of our day we hit the streets going by contacts. We decided
to talk to this guy, turns out he’s from the Netherlands, has a
Book of Mormon, and had looked into our religion before. Elder Winter
and I didn’t do anything special, just bore simple testimony like we
always do. It was a cool moment to give someone Pure testimony about
the restoration, because when brought to the hearts of the elect it is
the key to conversion.

I’m grateful for all my friends and family. It’s really nice to know
that I always have some love being sent from home. 😉

A Joyful Year

This was a wild week, first off I’ll tell you about my new ward mission leader…

So he just got back from a Temple Mission in Finland, and I just got to know him a little better. He’s been an Area Seventy… twice. The Freiberg Temple Präsident, Germany Berlin Mission Präsident after the wall came down, a patriarch in Russia (speaks 7 languages), and was in the meeting with President Monson and Elder Nelson when they met with the DDR officials, to get missionaries through the wall and into East Germany. The man’s been sustained in conference like 5 times!!!!

So when he called me Sunday morning at 7:30 and said “You know we’re meeting at 8 o‘clock right?” (Apparently someone had told us) but I made the mistake of hesitating… Haha he immediately said “say YES elder” so I blurted out a YES! And we quickly finished getting ready and ran down stairs.

Our meeting was awesome, he pretty much gave us a mission president interview while talking about the work here. Afterwards we looked him up in gospel library, read his articles in the ensign, and his conversion story in a talk from Elder Packer. A loving man, I’m excited for his help.

We also had the wonderful experience to visit the Freiberg Temple with our recent convert (from the beginning of the year) the Magdeburg Elders also came and brought an investigator, and recent convert. Even though the Temple was closed you could still feel the spirit of the Lord’s House. The sisters in Freiberg gave us an amazing tour of the grounds, and made their first experience with the Temple a good one.

The “Year Mark” was celebrated in a great fashion with the one and only Elder Vellinga (from my MTC group)! We had an exchange so it worked out perfectly. For dinner that night we went to the nice restaurant on the river. The waiter took us to the VIP section… (or the no smoking room) and then they actually brought us complimentary champagne… once we smelled it we realized what it was and had the waiter take it back. Haha.

That night we were able to teach the branch in “ward council” together. We pumped them up with missionary work, and then shared what we’ve learned in the last year. A cool moment with a good friend of mine, and very special to reflect on what was learned in this last year. And what a year it has been, I want to laugh when I think of myself a year ago. I’ve been able to see how the Book of Mormon really brings people closer to Christ, for example: me.

The gospel brings the peace that the people need, I know that it is through Christ that we become better, and doing so, we will find and experience real joy.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14)

BEAR(n)burg

Well if you want a true update on how things are going… finding, finding, finding, finding. And actually that has been the last 5 weeks… we have yet to teach a lesson in English/German this transfer. (Albanian is a little hard) But it’s okay! I’m having joy in the fact that the gospel is true, this city is beautiful, and that our Savior is with us.

It was also a very special week for me. I have found a new hope, and have come closer to our Savior.
It all started with a nice pump up letter from my wing-man Elder Demass down in the Frankfurt mission, and then a great lesson from our Zone Leaders in District Meeting. I honestly am not sure what it was but I had a moment where I decided I was going to kick it in gear, and join the big leagues. I realized I’d been playing too much Triple A ball, playing well, looking good, and feeling pretty good. But I wanted to join the Majors, be one of the greats, not in the sight of man, but in our Heavenly Father’s. And to do it, I’d have to start TALKING TO EVERYONE! I’m still not perfect, but this week I was looking like a mad man, talking to people in the heart of the city, dragging Elder E as I went. As we went, most of my fear left me and I really felt that the Savior can really help us through ALL our struggles, he wants to perfect us, we often just need to let him.

Also this whole desire has affected me in more ways as well. This last week I’ve been to bed on time, woken up exactly on time, (I always try, but once in a while wake up on the floor mid sit-up…) and with that have been amazingly awake, in my morgen sport, and now I’ve been working out at night. It’s been a wonderful blessing having the Lord’s help. But I need to keep my part up.

Friday we will be taking the recent convert from 8 months ago to the Freiberg Temple! The missionaries will have something prepared, even though it’s being remodeled I can’t wait to see it.

Jesus is the Christ, our Redeemer, and He will strengthen us. THINGS TO REMEMBER.

Love,
Elder Winkel

Visited the Bears this week, but ya know just the “necessities”.

Hannover

This week we were able to go to the beautiful one and only city of Hannover! The place of dreams, city of courage, town of terrific, land of love… Yeah you get it, the place is awesome. But first we had to get there… So that meant that we had to get over to Köthen to catch the train, an early morning train, and we would have ended up sitting in Köthen forever, and Elder Illum and I didn’t want to do that, so we decided we’d ride our bikes and surprise the Elders there. It was about 22km and we didn’t have a map but we knew which direction it was in, and we wanted to make a sweet time lapse so we duct taped our iPads to our chests… haha but it was amazing just riding in the cool morning breeze through green fields and windmills.

Hannover was great, and I really enjoyed my interview with Präsident Fingerle, and it was different to do in German, but different isn’t always a bad thing. 😉 I’m excited for the plan he has, and it will continue the “crescendo” in our mission.

Now back to the city of Hannover. Ahh it was great to walk those streets again, I haven’t been able to visit since my first area, so it was cool to see it again. And to see it with Elder Vellinga, and Elder Braun, a couple of good friends from the original Hannover Zone.

At the end of the day we got back to Köthen, but luckily for us our train had fallen out that we were going to take our bikes on… But we at least we had the bikes! So in the dark we rode home. The day ended in about 50km of biking, because of a few wrong detours. But we enjoyed it!

Since I’ve started to work so much with personal study I decided to give a lesson on it in district meeting. The foundation of it, and the moving parts that make it come together to create a special spiritual experience, that readies us for personal revelation. I’ve noticed that there are 3 main types of scripture study: Reading, Studying, and Pondering. Pondering… now that’s a good one, that’s the one I focused on. Pondering was a new concept for me of a sort, to have a time to just sit and think, no music, no sports center, nothing. Just think about the things I read in the scriptures, and life in general.

I like what Joseph Smith said about pondering:

The things of God are of deep import; and time, and experience, and careful and ponderous and solemn thoughts can only find them out. Thy mind, O man! If thou wilt lead a soul unto salvation, must stretch as high as the utmost heavens, and search into and contemplate the darkest abyss, and the broad expanse of eternity–thou must commune with God”

Now now now, that doesn’t mean we ponder that deep doctrine all the live-long day, but he does tell us how important the things pertaining to the gospel are, and that we really need the spirit to guide our understanding.

So a cool story….

My friend Elder Max Ferrin (S/O) down in Ghana sent a referral up north for us. He was out and about and some lady called them over asking if they were German, they said no, but she said that’s okay I want you to meet my German son! (Via Skype) so they Skyped the kid and told him some friends in Germany would contact him.

So we got the info, I called him up and he said he didn’t have any time… like every German. But then what do you know he calls me up a week later and says he wants to meet up. He lives up in Hamburg so I phoned the elders up gave them the address and they got in contact with him.

They texted me how it’s going, they said he’s a super cool guy, about 17 and interested in baptism because he was baptized when he was young but wants to choose for himself. Also something cool they said was they could see his potential to go on a mission. He’s already planning on coming to institute and church. The Elders were super excited, I’m sure it was an answer to their prayers.

I know the Lord provides a way for His children, PONDER this week about how He’s provided a way for you. Because either big or small He has. I know it.

Elder Winkel ??

I realized I’ve been in almost every major city in my mission and know my way around a little bit from Berlin, Hannover, Chemnitz, Leipzig, Hamburg (only there once), Magdeburg etc. just need Dresden.

Biking

Was it a good week?

A good week it was. Mission Tour was in Berlin so of course it was good! Wednesday night we went to overnight with my friend Elder Braun over in Köthen, which was of course a blast. The next morning we woke up at 4 am, walked 30 minutes through the dark street of the city to catch our train to Berlin.

Elder Johnson of the Seventy was there, and he pumped us up to help our investigators to keep commitments, it was great and I learned a ton. Also I got to see all my favorite Elders of East Germany! Great time and always fun to see Berlin.

Well looking at our numbers for this week, I was thinking “wow it wasn’t that bad of a week!”, then I went back and looked at our other numbers, and I guess that’s how they usually are. I realized that as I’ve stopped counting success with numbers I’ve found more joy in it, less stress. (For all of you number crunchers out there, yes I know why they are important). Because as long as I’m trying, success will come, and not in the ways I always want, but what I want isn’t as important as what the Lord wants. I often remind myself of the quote by Einstein:

“Many of the things you can count, don’t count. Many of the things you can’t count, really count.”

I think that is quite true, if I think about how many lessons we DIDN’T teach, will I remember the moments I had with that member, or that drunk guy on the street. BUT we are working to build a teaching pool and to find the one that is ready for the important covenant with our Father in Heaven.

One way we are looking to accomplish this is through members! We met with a few this week, and to hear some of their conversion stories is amazing. There’s a man in our ward that when he was investigating the church back in the GDR, had a dream of him looking into a room full of people dressed in white. Not until after he joined the church, he saw a picture of the Celestial room in the Salt lake Temple, did he realize what his dream was of. He and his wife have amazing testimonies, and won’t hesitate to tell you about “the tornado that went by our house in 2001”.

Although there is a lack of investigators, I’m loving Bernburg! It’s beautiful here, I’m having a good time, a lot of cool people here. And plus, we get to pass the bears by the castle every once in a while!

This week, I invite you as a representative of the Lord Jesus Christ to LOOK for the blessing and miracles you see in your week and have a good one at that.

Elder Winkel

I received a referral from my boy Elder Ferrin down in Ghana! I called
the guy up and got to talk to him, he’s from Hamburg, so I forwarded
it to the Elders there!

This week we have interviews with President Fingerle, in the one and only city of HANNOVER, I’m pumped! Hannover is one of my favorite cities, we also got permission to spend a couple of hours of our P-day there. It will be sweet.
